San Francisco 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall is in stable condition after being shot by a teenager in an attempted robbery in San Francisco on Saturday, the team said in a statement.

According to reports, Pearsall was walking alone when he suddenly had an altercation with the 17-year-old. The suspect, who also sustained an injury, was immediately taken into police custody after the incident.

As of writing, authorities have yet to confirm what the suspect tried to steal from the 23-year-old Pearsall, who was drafted by the 49ers as the 31st overall pick.

Following the incident, NFL legend Chad Ochocinco expressed his thoughts and offered a valuable reminder.

"There's another lesson from this for athletes: Anybody out there that has nice items, nothing is worth your life," Ochocinco said on the "Nightcap" podcast. "You can buy another Rolex. You can buy another chain. You can buy another car.

"If you are at gunpoint, you give up those possessions."

His co-host and fellow NFL great Shannon Sharpe pointed out that Pearsall wasn't held at gunpoint. He said the wide receiver and the suspect "tussled."

"Don't do that," stressed Ochocinco, a three-time All-Pro First Team member. "You only get one shot (in life). This isn't a video game.

"Why play tough? If somebody comes up to you and say, 'Let me get whatever is off you,' you already know they holding (a gun)."

Pearsall's mother said her son was shot in the chest but fortunately, the bullet "exited out his back." She added that the 49ers newcomer is "in good spirits."

Pearsall starred at Florida before getting drafted by the 49ers. He tallied 965 receiving yards and six touchdowns in his final season with the Gators.
