    Commanders Weakest Position: Offensive Tackle?

    By Wil Riggs,

Heading into this season, the biggest question mark about the Washington Commanders is who is going to play the tackle positions? Right now, former Kansas City Chief Andrew Wylie is beginning his second season in Washington and is the starting right tackle.

The problem here is that Wylie has been a turnstile since signing with the Commanders. He’s looked slow and sluggish a lot of the time. With rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels in the backfield, Washington needs Wylie to be way better than he was last season.

At left tackle, we are still unsure as to who will start. Rookie third-rounder Brandon Coleman was doing an excellent job until he suffered a pectoral injury in training camp.

The former Horned Frog out of TCU didn’t play a single snap in the preseason. But based on his history of hard work, Coleman could get the start Week 1.

Coleman played two years of junior college football in a small east Texas town before moving to TCU. His hard work there earned him a scholarship, and his play on the field helped his team to a FBS National Championship game berth.

There are a lot of questions about Coleman’s availability for Week 1, and we could possibly see Cornelius Lucas starting at left tackle in that game. Lucus went undrafted in 2015, but is now entering his tenth season in the NFL.

There are currently no great options at tackle. Wylie hasn’t played well. Lucas is an average tackle and Coleman is a complete unknown.

Coach Dan Quinn & Co. have to make the best move for the team. If they don’t, Daniels will be running for his life until they figure it out.
