Fans in Disbelief Over Updated ESPN FPI College Football Rankings

ESPN has updated its Football Power Index (FPI) rankings following the first full Saturday of college football action.

The FPI was developed over a decade ago to measure team performance in a predictive model. It estimates production from each team's offense, defense and special teams units to create the most accurate possible matchup expectations.

On Sunday, September 1, Georgia maintained their hold at the top thanks to a 34-3 drubbing of Clemson in Atlanta. Meanwhile, Alabama's 63-0 destruction of Western Kentucky sparked a leap to No. 2 in FPI, taking over for Oregon, who plummeted from No. 2 to No. 10 after escaping with a 10-point win over Idaho.

So, there was plenty of movement, but some of the changes were just too much for fans. For instance, Louisville at No. 13? Florida State somehow hanging on at No. 17 despite an embarrassment in Week 0? Colorado not included after their big Thursday win?

These were just a few complaints from fans following the updated FPI rankings.

"Why is FSU in top 25?" wrote one user on X.

"A&M loses to ND and goes up 2 rankings and Louisville goes from unranked to 13??" another asked, and it's a good question.

"Louisville at 13 is a joke," added an account named Kentucky Sports Tonight.

"I like it, all looks good here. Colorado should be in there though after their big win," commented another fan.

"Michigan ranked too high," added a Texas fan.

At least that one will get settled next weekend on the field when the Longhorns visit Michigan Stadium at 12:00 p.m. Eastern time on September 7.

Other than those few quibbles, the FPI generally provided a reasonable snapshot of what the top 25 teams may look like moving forward.
