The New York Yankees couldn’t stop the St. Louis Cardinals’ hitters on Sunday as they lost 14-7.

Here’s how the Yankees played in the series finale:

    1. Both starting pitchers failed to make it past four innings.

Both teams were red-hot offensively out of the gate. The Cardinals got the scoring started with a Jordan Walker RBI single in the top of the second. The Bronx Bombers responded with Giancarlo Stanton’s 24th home run of the year and then Jazz Chichholm Jr.’s speed led to the team’s second run in the bottom half of the inning. Nestor Cortes allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the fourth inning before recording two strikeouts. Masyn Winn then put the Cardinals in front with a two-run double and Luken Baker hit a two-run homer in the very next at-bat. The Yankees pitcher’s day would end there, as he would allow five runs in four innings pitched. Miles Mikolas didn’t fare much better. The first five Yankee batters would reach base safely to lead off the fifth inning, bringing the score to 7-5. Mikolas was pulled from the game after allowing five runs (three earned runs) in four-plus innings.

    2. The Yankees bullpen couldn’t keep up with the Cardinals’ bats.

The Yankees would eventually go on to tie the game 7-7 after scoring another two runs in the sixth, but that tie would not hold for long. Jake Cousins started the seventh inning by allowing a walk to Nolan Arenado. Ivan Herrera then recorded a single to put two runners on base. Tommy Kahnle entered the game out of the bullpen, and he recorded the second out of the inning. The Cardinals would then record four straight hits, driving in five runs in the process. The team would tack on another two runs in the ninth inning to put their total at 14 runs on the afternoon. Six Yankee relievers would end up allowing nine earned runs in the loss.

    3. The Yankees offense hit well, but not well enough.

Despite the team’s pitching struggles, the offense played well. The team managed 11 hits in the game, including Stanton’s early home run, and three doubles. Eight of the team’s nine batters reached base safely, but the pitching couldn’t keep the game close enough to give them an opportunity to win. The Bronx Bombers scored 18 runs over the three-game series which double their run total from the Yankees’ prior series against the Washington Nationals.
