On Sunday, Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury traveled to Las Vegas to take on the defending champion Aces at Michelob ULTRA Arena. The Mercury have fallen to the seventh seed in the WNBA playoffs after the Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky on Friday.

A little over two minutes into the third quarter, Taurasi was assessed a technical foul after complaining to the referees. This marked her seventh tech of the 2024 season. WNBA rules state that any player who picks up seven technical fouls will be suspended for one game.

For every other technical foul a player receives after their seventh (9th, 11th, 13th, etc...), they are given an additional suspension.

The league can review Taurasi's latest technical foul and rescind it if they decide against the ref's call. But if that does not happen, Taurasi will be unavailable for the Mercury's game on Tuesday, September 3, against the Atlanta Dream.

The timing of the suspension for the former UConn Huskies star is not ideal. The Mercury are in the middle of a close playoff race, and any one loss can have a huge impact.
