Ron Washington, manager of the Los Angeles Angels , made a surprising decision during Saturday's game by pulling shortstop Zach Neto mid-game. This move came just one day after Neto achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first Angels infielder to record a 20-home run, 20-steal season.

Washington explained that Neto's performance was lacking, noting that he seemed disengaged. The decision followed a rough sixth inning for Neto, which included a fielding error and a misstep during a pickoff attempt in the fourth inning. Typically a reliable player, Neto has struggled recently, committing three errors over his last two games.

After the game, Washington clarified that his intention was not to hurt Neto's feelings but to address his performance.

“I wasn’t trying to send a message to hurt his feelings, but he wasn’t into it,” said Washington. “Since he wasn’t into it, I removed him from the game.

Neto, reflecting on the situation, acknowledged the strong relationship he has with Washington and expressed respect for the manager's decision.

“Me and Wash have a really good relationship, and he thought it was best to take me out in that moment. I respect it and just try to be the best teammate I can be.”

Despite Neto's absence, the Angels secured a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners, thanks in part to standout performances from Mickey Moniak and Jo Adell. Moniak hit his first walk-off home run and has been on a hot streak, hitting four home runs in his last four games. Adell also contributed significantly, hitting two home runs during the game, marking his 20th of the season.

Neto returned to the lineup on Sunday, where he went 0-for-2 with a walk in the Angels' 3-2 win over the Mariners.
