Tommy Pham, a former outfielder for the San Diego Padres , has been designated for assignment by the St. Louis Cardinals. Shortly after, he signed with the Kansas City Royals.

Pham expressed gratitude towards the Cardinals for allowing him to pursue a new opportunity. He played 23 games for St. Louis after being traded from the Chicago White Sox, hitting .206 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. During his time with the White Sox, he had a better performance, batting .266 with five homers and 19 RBIs over 70 games.

This season has seen Pham struggle to find stability with one team. His trade from the White Sox to the Cardinals was initially seen as a chance to join a contender, but his second stint in St. Louis did not go as planned. Previously, from 2014 to 2018, he enjoyed success with the Cardinals, including a standout 2017 season where he hit a career-high 23 home runs.

The Royals also made moves over the weekend, acquiring Robbie Grossman from the Texas Rangers and trading for Yuli Gurriel from the Atlanta Braves. The Royals' general manager noted that acquiring players through waivers is a limited option this time of year, but they had been monitoring Pham and Grossman closely.

Pham brings versatility to the Royals, capable of playing both left and right field, along with valuable postseason experience from his time with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season. Over his 11-year career, he has maintained a .258 batting average with 137 home runs, 462 RBIs, and 125 stolen bases across 1,098 games.
