The UCLA Bruins faced a challenging start to their season, narrowly escaping an upset against the University of Hawaii. As they prepare for their inaugural year in the Big Ten, concerns are mounting about their performance and ability to compete effectively.

With the toughest schedule in the Big Ten, the Bruins need to address several key issues following their season opener. Here are the top three concerns:

    1. Quarterback Performance

Ethan Garbers, the Bruins' quarterback, is adapting to a new offensive system, which can be a tough transition in his final college season.

His first half against Hawaii was underwhelming, but he improved significantly after halftime, leading the team to victory. The hope is that this momentum will carry into the rest of the season.

    2. Running Game Struggles

Historically strong in the running department, UCLA's ground game faltered against Hawaii, with running backs T.J. Harden, Keegan Jones, and Anthony Frias II managing only 24 yards on 13 carries.

Injuries to two offensive tackles have compounded the issue, and the Bruins must find a way to revitalize their rushing attack to remain competitive.

    3. Defensive Reliance

The Bruins' defense shone in the opener, limiting Hawaii to just three points and 100 yards in the second half. They also created two turnovers and recorded 11 tackles for loss.

However, if the offense continues to struggle, the defense will face immense pressure to perform consistently. Relying too heavily on the defense could jeopardize the team's chances of reaching a bowl game.

As the Bruins move forward, addressing these concerns will be crucial for their success in the Big Ten.
