Bears Make Huge Announcement on Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears made a major announcement on Monday, September 2 involving eight of their players.

Just six days ahead of the team's regular season opener on September 8 against the Tennessee Titans, the Bears announced their 2024 team captains .

Headlining the star-studded group is rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in April's 2024 NFL draft.

The other seven captains include wide receiver DJ Moore, cornerback Jaylon Johnson, safety Kevin Byard, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, linebacker T.J. Edwards, tight end Cole Kmet and 19-year veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis.

Fans were quick to react to the announcement on social media. While the sentiment was largely positive for a rookie earning such a highly regarded honor, some commenters took exception to the Bears' decision.

"Too many captains. Caleb hasn't earned it yet," one fan wrote .

"15% of the team is a captain," added another.

"How is Montez Sweat not a captain" another asked .

The 22-year-old Williams played in two of Chicago's four preseason games, totaling 170 passing yards on 10-of-20 passing, two carries for 20 yards and his first career rushing touchdown.

Williams, who will wear the No. 18 jersey for Chicago, opens the NFL regular season as the odds-on favorite (+150 according to Caesars sportsbook) to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels (+550) and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (+750) are among the award's other frontrunners .
