Bills' Backup Quarterback Situation Still in Question Heading Into Week 1

The Buffalo Bills have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL today with Josh Allen manning the helm.

What the Bills have behind him, though, remains a major question going into the 2024 season.

Buffalo signed Mike White to a free-agent contract last week in the hopes he would be the team's third quarterback. Their immediate backup plans continue to be a mystery, though.

After signing Mitch Trubisky back as the immediate backup, the Bills hoped he would be the kind of competent backup they have been looking for. Instead, the former Bear and Steeler has suffered a knee injury that could keep him out longer than originally intended.

USA Today’s Nick Wojton explained exactly that from Bills practice,

“However, it’s not just that cut and dry with [Trubisky’s return to practice],” Wojton wrote. “Trubisky returned during a limit period when the media was able to watch practice. It seems possible that after that, Trubisky did not do much.”

Trubsiky remains Buffalo's chief backup to Allen entering the new season. The Bills will need him healthy, though, to determine how competitive the team could be without their Pro Bowl quarterback leading the way.

And it doesn't sound like a guarantee that Trubisky will be ready to start the season just yet.
