Anonymous NFL Agent Hints That Raiders Fired McDaniels Too Soon

The first half of the 2023 season was not a good one for the Las Vegas Raiders . The team began the season 3-5, and with head coach Josh McDaniels seemingly losing control of the locker room, he was promptly fired midway through his second year on the job.

Apparently, that was too soon, according to an anonymous agent who took part in The Athletic's survey regarding their thoughts on the league's franchises.

The Raiders ended up being the second-most 'unstable' franchise, receiving seven votes from the agents. One of them alluded to the fact that part of that ranking could be due to the quick firing of McDaniels, and GM Dave Ziegler:

"The owner (Mark Davis) frequently makes significant changes. He put Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler in charge and fired them after less than two seasons," said the agent.

"Now, the Raiders have an inexperienced coach in Antonio Pierce and a retread GM hire in Tom Telesco. Organizations start at the top, and Davis doesn’t provide stability.”

This is a very interesting claim. It's not as if it would be wrong to claim that the Raiders have made several significant changes involving the team's leadership recently, that much is true.

However, while owner Mark Davis is no stranger to big decisions, it's hard to argue with his decision to fire both McDaniels and Ziegler. Neither of the two were getting the job done, and McDaniels was starting to lose the locker room.

The agent also alludes to the idea that the hires of head coach Antonio Pierce and GM Tom Telesco weren't wise moves either. Pierce is inexperienced, but it's hard to deny that he's got a feel for the locker room .

As for Telesco, yes he's a retread hire, but so are most of the current GM's across the league. That feels like a bit of a nitpick. Telesco has made some big moves since entering the front office, and has already started to do away with some of the previous regimes' personnel choices.

There are definitely some truths to part of what this agent is saying. However, the claim that the Raiders fired McDaniels too soon is definitely a bit of a hot take.
