Former MaxPreps Player of the Year Isaac Wilson got his first taste of Utah football action in Thursday's season kickoff against the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds, and while there were some expected hiccups here and there, for the most part, Wilson made a solid case to remain the teams QB moving forward.

Straight out of high school, Wilson beat out program veteran Brandon Rose and five-star transfer QB Sam Huard for the QB2 role behind Cam Rising, and as a result, he netted most of the second-half snaps against SUU.

With his brother, Denver Broncos QB Zach Wilson in the crowd, Wilson went 7-11 for 74 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions, but flashed moments of impressive skill throughout.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham talked fondly of the freshman QBs performance in the leadup press conference to the battle against the Baylor Bears.

"He made some good throws once he got settled in there in the second half, made some good runs from the pocket," Whittingham said.

"He was very efficient, he threw two balls that he wishes he had back, but it was good to get him the reps, he had 37 reps so that's good for him and it will pay off at some point down the line," he continued.

While it is unlikely to see Wilson make an appearance under center against the much tougher Baylor Bears, it's good to get him as many reps as possible in the proper situations just in case the injury bug strikes and Wilson is the next man up.
