Michigan State football kicked off its season under new head coach Jonathan Smith, but the opening game left fans with more questions than answers.

The Spartans narrowly defeated Florida Atlantic , winning 16-10, but the performance raised concerns, particularly about the offense.

Despite the shaky offensive showing, the defense stood out. They limited Florida Atlantic to just 10 points and forced two turnovers, showcasing what may be the strongest Michigan State defense since the Mark Dantonio era. The defense even scored the team's first points of the season with a safety.

As the Spartans prepare for their next game against Maryland, which just scored 50 points in its opener, the focus will shift to the offense.

Quarterback Aidan Chiles had a rocky start, struggling with accuracy and timing. Many of his deep throws were overthrown, likely due to nerves in his first game. Miscommunication with receivers was also evident, but these issues are typically resolved with more practice.

On a positive note, running back Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams emerged as a bright spot in the offense. He rushed for over 100 yards and scored a touchdown, indicating he could become a key player moving forward.

While the first game was far from perfect, many of the issues are fixable. However, the offensive line's performance is a significant concern, as they struggled to create running lanes and protect the quarterback.

The Spartans also had three scoreless red zone possessions, a trend that is unlikely to continue.

Michigan State's upcoming matchup against Maryland will be telling. If the Spartans can address their offensive struggles, they have a chance to secure a win on the road and demonstrate their potential for the rest of the season.
