Kirk Herbstreit Goes Off On 'Moron' After Criticism of His Dog

While Sunday night's matchup between the No. 23 USC Trojans and No. 13 LSU Tigers may have been the initial headliner of the college football slate, it appeared that Kirk Herbstreit's dog, Ben, stole the show.

The 10-year-old golden retriever often travels with Herbstreit during the college football season and even got some screen time during the pregame show on ABC. Most fans loved Ben's appearances during the game, with one even suggesting that Ben join the broadcast as a third member.

However, there was also a crowd who wasn't fond of Ben's presence and took to social media to call out Herbstreit.

"Dog should be playing with other dogs. Not trapped on a private jet and locked in a broadcast studio. Not good Kirk. Also Bama should’ve been in your top 12," wrote one fan.

A comment that led to Herbstreit calling the fan a "moron."

"You’re a moron! Beat it," wrote Herbstreit in response to the criticism of Ben being with him during football games.

While it isn't uncommon for social media users to get a bit confident when criticizing public figures, Herbstreit clearly will not tolerate any Ben slander. Not only because he is clearly his best friend, but as Herbstreit revealed, Ben had himself a tough offseason.

When one fan asked how old Ben was, Herbstreit replied that he was 10 but had some major health issues to deal with in the past few months.

"10," Herbstreit replied ."Was diagnosed with leukemia in March and had major surgery in late July to remove 2 masses on his spleen and intestine. Both cancerous. Been a challenging offseason for Ben but he has had an incredible recovery in the last few weeks. Just so thankful he’s feeling better and able to travel with me.

"Honestly I think being out and seeing people on the road really helps his spirit and gives him something to look forward to. Will keep a very close eye on him and react accordingly. He had a GREAT week 1. Taking it one week at a time."

On top of getting to travel the country, Ben now has his own show called "Walks With Ben." A show that he and Herbstreit host as they walk across the field with a special guest. The first episode was released on Sunday, featuring former Texas A&M star and Heisman winner Johnny Manziel.

Hopefully, Ben will be able to stay in good health and continue to accompany Herbstreit wherever he goes, as he always seems to bring joy to those who encounter him.
