Nancy Lieberman and Sheryl Swoopes are two of the best women's basketball players the world has ever seen. But the two have different views on the Indiana Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.

Throughout the 2024 season, Swoopes has been against giving Clark any of the credit that she deserves, while Lieberman has voiced how impressed she has been with the former Iowa star during the Dallas-Fever game last Sunday, September 1.

On Monday, Lieberman made an appearance on " The Stephen A. Smith Show " and discussed the controversy surrounding Swoopes and Clark. She proceeded to reveal that her relationship with Swoopes has taken a hit.

"I've known Sheryl, I've coached her, have a lot of respect for her," Lieberman said. "I called her when Caitlin was still playing at Iowa, and she had just broken [Pete] Maravich's record... There was this quote by Sheryl that said... [Clark's] records were illegitimate."

Lieberman then went on to reveal what she said to Swoopes in a phone call with her.

"I called her as a friend, and I said, 'You can say whatever you want. You can have your own opinion about anybody, but you do have to get the statistics right,'" Lieberman continued. "'If you did get ahead of this and say, 'Hey, I made a mistake on my numbers,' then this thing is over...'"

Lieberman finished by mentioning the status of their relationship following the call.

"Well, she got upset with me on the phone.. and so our relationship is pretty much not happening at this point," Lieberman added. "I tried to talk to her at the Final Four, she didn't want to talk to me."

It certainly is unfortunate that the relationship between the two basketball legends was ruined over Clark, especially since everyone should be celebrating her impact on women's basketball, not fighting over it.

Lieberman spent only two seasons in the WNBA, as a majority of her professional basketball career came before the league's inaugural season. She did, however, become the WNBA's oldest player ever after signing a seven-day contract with the Detroit Shock at the age of 50.

Swoopes spent the majority of her WNBA career with the Houston Comets from 1997-2007. She led them to four straight WNBA championships while winning three MVP awards.
