Chiefs Make Incredible Gesture for NFL Vet Placed on Reserve List

Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire will miss at least the first four games of the upcoming season after he was placed by the squad on the non-football illness (NFI) list.

Edwards-Helaire has missed several practices as the Chiefs prepare for their title defense. Last month, he revealed that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Teams are not mandated to pay for the weekly salaries of players on the NFI list. But according to a report from Chiefs Digest's Matt Derrick , the Chiefs will continue to financially support Edwards-Helaire.

"The Chiefs plan to keep Edwards-Helaire, who is scheduled to make $1.125 million this season, on the payroll and continue providing him assistance in his treatment, a source tells Chiefs Digest," Derrick wrote.

"The club also hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Edwards-Helaire returning to the field later this season."

The 25-year-old Edwards-Helaire has dealt with mental health issues due to his PTSD. He said it could be largely traced to an incident in 2018 when he was at Louisiana State.

According to a report from ESPN's Adam Teicher , Edwards-Helaire and a teammate were trying to sell an electronic item when an 18-year-old man tried to rob them at gunpoint. They acted in self-defense, leading to the suspect getting fatally shot.

Derrick pointed out that a state prosecutor in Louisiana ruled that Edwards-Helaire and his teammate "responded with justifiable force."

Drafted by the Chiefs as the 32nd overall pick in 2020, Edwards-Helaire quickly carved himself a role with the offense. However, various injuries after his rookie year prevented him from making a consistent impact. Still, he helped the Chiefs capture back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

Last season, he tallied 411 total yards and two touchdowns.

Derrick reported that the Chiefs' main focus with Edwards-Helaire is "not concerned about football at this point” but getting him into a "good place."
