Skip Bayless Poses An Intriguing Proposition for Florida State Fans

Following Florida State’s embarrassing 28-13 loss to Boston College on Monday night, the number of fans calling for head coach Mike Norvell’s job was growing.

With two losses in the last nine days, Norvell’s record is 31-19 in four-plus seasons with the Seminoles and there’s no question he has one of the hottest head-coaching seats in college football.

With speculation spreading like wild fire that Florida State could potentially make a head-coaching change at some point this season, former ESPN and Fox Sports personality Skip Bayless proposed an intriguing solution should FSU go in a different direction.

“Wonder if Deion (Sanders) would consider coaching his alma mater?” Bayless tweeted after Monday’s game.

Sanders, who’s 31-14 as a college head coach with stops at Jackson State and the University of Colorado, starred for the Seminoles from 1985 to 1988.

He was a two-time unanimous All-American and won the Jim Thorpe award, given annually to the top defensive back in college football, during his senior year. Sanders’ 14 interceptions were the second-most in school history when he was drafted fifth overall in 1989.

Though Sanders has had a rough go of things at Colorado facing a step up in competition at the Pac-12 last season and the Big 12 this year (he has a 5-8 record), he was a two-time Coach of the Year in the SWAC and has a track record of being highly successful on the recruiting trail.

However, there are plenty of roadblocks to a potential Sanders-FSU reunion. The 57-year-old coach signed a five-year, $29.5 million contract with CU in 2023 and he would owe the school $10 million if he leaves in 2024, $8 million if he leaves in 2025 and $5 million if he leaves at any point from 2026 on.

But if Sanders is fired without cause, Colorado would owe him 75% of his remaining contract.
