Michigan Football News: Alcohol Sales Debut at Big House, Leads to Ejections

Michigan Stadium opened its gates with a fresh buzz—literally—as the Wolverines took on Fresno State in their season opener, securing a solid 30-10 victory. But it wasn’t just the football that had people talking; 27 fans found themselves on the wrong side of the stadium’s security protocols and were promptly ejected from the Big House.

The University of Michigan's Division of Public Safety and Security reported a variety of reasons for the ejections. Disorderly conduct led the charge with ten ejections, followed closely by nine fans who clearly pre-gamed a little too hard.

And while the stadium might have new rules on what’s served in cups, it didn’t change the fact that none of the ejected individuals were students or employees of the university—just overzealous fans who couldn’t handle their excitement.

Five fans were shown the door for breaking stadium rules, with one student among them. There was even an ejection tied to a fight, and someone who attempted to use a university ID card for less-than-honest purposes.

And if that wasn’t enough, one person was removed after needing help from Huron Valley Ambulance—because nothing says game day like a trip to the hospital.

This was the first time alcohol was sold at Michigan Stadium, with beer, wine, and canned cocktails available to fans. The decision to introduce alcohol sales could explain the spike in fan ejections, although last season wasn’t exactly tranquil with 126 ejections across seven home games.

As Michigan fans savor this opening win and a 1-0 start to the season, all eyes are now on the next challenge: the Texas Longhorns, who will visit the Big House on September 7. Let’s hope the next game is remembered more for what happens on the field than in the stands.
