College Football Coach Throws Quarterback Under The Bus After Poor Week 1 Performance

    By Alex Weber,

You never really know what you have at quarterback until the real games start. So, for some college football teams, Week 1 brought a dose of reality after an offseason of hype.

That was especially the case for a couple of ACC teams in Clemson and Florida State. Both starting quarterbacks actually committed to the Tigers out of high school — Cade Klubnik stayed the course and DJ Uiagalelei ended up at FSU after stints at both Clemson and Oregon State.

Both guys struggled in their first action of the year, but Klubnik took a major shot from his own head coach, Dabo Swinney, in Monday's press conference following the 34-3 loss to Georgia.

Swinney believed the first play of the game was indicative of the errors that sunk the Tigers all day long in their blowout defeat. They had a wide-open running back rolling out into the flat and Klubnik just misfired, badly.

"You could have made that throw, Chapel," Swinney said of the pass to one reporter named Chapel Fowler.

That was part of Swinney's greater point.

"The main thing is we gotta stop shooting ourselves in the foot," he added.

Surprisingly, Swinney actually went on to commend Klubnik for his performance and said he didn't think it was bad all the way around. However, he did throw him under the bus for that first pass by suggesting it was so easy that a random reporter at Monday's press conference could have completed it.

That sounds like a playful jab at Klubnik, but if he continues to perform worse than a guy like Chapel Fowler, perhaps Dabo Swinney will have to make a change.
