Maple Leafs Sign 2024 Stanley Cup Champion to Tryout Contract

The Toronto Maple Leafs have added 2024 Stanley Cup champion Steven Lorentz to their training camp roster, signing him to a professional tryout (PTO), as first reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman on September 3 .

"As just mentioned with @TheRog590, sounds like Stanley Cup champion Steven Lorentz is joining Toronto on a PTO," Friedman wrote on X.

Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving decided to extend a tryout offer to Lorentz, giving the forward an opportunity to prove himself and compete for a spot on the Leafs' lineup ahead of the 2024–25 NHL season.

PTO deals don't guarantee roster positions, however, so until Lorentz proves his worth and Toronto offers him a standard contract he won't join the Maple Leafs for the upcoming regular season.

Lorentz, 27, most recently won the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers, though he was limited to just 38 games during the regular season, where he tallied a single goal and three points overall.

In the postseason, Lorentz appeared in 16 games, contributing two goals as the Panthers made their run to hoisting the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history.

Despite his limited scoring output, Lorentz's championship experience could be of interest to the Maple Leafs. On top of that, and perhaps more importantly, adding Lorentz could bring some depth to the forward corps, most notably the fourth line.

The Carolina Hurricanes drafted Lorentz with the No. 186 pick of the 2015 NHL draft but he never solidified himself in the Canes rotation. He debuted in the 2020-21 season but the franchise traded him in July 2022 to the San Jose Sharks.

After spending one year with San Jose, he was traded once again on July 1, 2023, to the Panthers in exchange for Anthony Duclair. Now, after one more season, Lorentz will try to join his third NHL team by convincing the Maple Leafs to sign him.
