Lawsuit Dismissed Against Ex Commanders' kicker Brandon McManus

The lawsuit that prompted the Washington Commanders to cut ties with kicker Brandon McManus has been dismissed.

A judge in Florida temporarily threw out the case against McManus that was brought by two women who alleged he sexually assaulted them on a flight in 2023 when he was a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The case was dismissed without prejudice, meaning the women - who filed it anonymously - can amend it and re-file in 10 days using their real names.

McManus made 30 of 37 field goals and was named by Special Teams Player of the Week and Month for the Jaguars, who nonetheless didn't re-sign him. The Commanders signed him to a one-year contract in March, but released him June 2 when the allegations became public.

The women, who were identified only as "Jane Doe I" and "Jane Doe II" in the lawsuit filed in May, claims McManus rubbed against them during Jacksonville’s charter flight to London on Sept. 28, 2023. The women worked as flight attendants for Atlas Air, according to the complaint. They say the flight “quickly turned into a party” as McManus and other players violated safety regulations. According to the complaint, McManus “recruited” three other attendants and handed out $100 bills to encourage them to drink and “dance inappropriately for him.”

“We are very pleased with the court’s order in connection with Mr. McManus’ motion to dismiss these baseless allegations,” McManus’s attorney, Brett Gallaway, said in a statement. “We look forward to him returning to the NFL playing field as soon as possible.”

While McManus remains a free agent, the Commanders scrambled to find a kicker in training camp and preseason and finally traded for veteran Cade York. McManus never attempted a field goal for Washington in a game, preseason or even training camp.

The Commanders open the season Sunday at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
