    Will O-Max Make Mavs Rotation?

When the Dallas Mavericks traded for Olivier-Maxence Prosper on draft night in 2023, many fans envisioned the athletic wing carving out a significant role off the bench in his second season. However, recent offseason moves have cast doubt on that once-promising outlook.

The Mavericks' signing of veteran wing Naji Marshall and two-way player Kessler Edwards has created additional competition for minutes. These acquisitions, coupled with Prosper's limited rookie campaign, have left the 21-year-old's place in the rotation uncertain heading into the 2024-25 season.

In Prosper's first NBA season, he spent most of his time in the G League. In 24 appearances, he averaged 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds. The highlight was his efficiency, as he shot 51.5 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from 3-point range.

The addition of Edwards presents a direct challenge to Prosper's minutes. Both players offer similar defensive versatility and athleticism, but Edwards brings two years of NBA experience. For Prosper to separate himself, he'll need to make significant strides offensively.

Prosper's defense remains his calling card, and he showed flashes of being a disruptive force with his size. However, with the Mavericks pushing for contention, he'll need to prove he can contribute more consistently on offense to earn meaningful minutes.

For Prosper to avoid falling out of the rotation entirely, he must focus on two key areas: improved finishing around the rim and more consistent 3-point shooting. If he can make strides in these aspects of his game, Prosper still has a chance to be a valuable piece for the Mavericks. His combination of size, athleticism and defensive potential remains intriguing. However, the clock is ticking, and the competition for minutes is only getting fiercer.

Prosper's development will be an interesting subplot to monitor heading into training camp in October. Will he leap many expected, or will he find himself on the outside looking in? The next few months of work could determine whether Prosper becomes a key contributor or an afterthought in the Mavericks' rotation.
