The Texas Longhorns and Michigan Wolverines have a combined 14 national titles. Despite their history, the programs have only played once, in 2005. The Longhorns won that matchup 38-37 at the Rose Bowl.

The game has attracted plenty of national attention, with College GameDay and Big Noon Kickoff in town. The second-all-time meeting of the two powerhouses could have major implications for the College Football Playoff.

Greg McElroy weighed in on a recent episode of " Always College Football ." Michigan returns stars like running back Donovan Edwards, defensive back Will Johnson, defensive lineman Mason Graham and tight end Colston Loveland.

Texas brings back quarterback Quinn Ewers, offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. and defensive end Ethan Burke. The Longhorns added former Alabama Crimson Tide receiver Isaiah Bond, former UTSA Roadrunners edge rusher Trey Moore and former Clemson Tigers safety Andrew Mukuba from the transfer portal.

McElroy believed that Texas' playmakers would stand out in the matchup and picked the Longhorns to win in Ann Arbor.

"...I think Texas' weapons will be able to create enough space, and I think the veteran play of Quinn Ewers gives Texas a slight advantage," McElroy said. "He's won big games, and I think he can do so again on the road again in what should be a hostile environment. I like the Texas Longhorns."

The Longhorns have proved that they are not afraid of non-conference matchups in the past. Last season, Texas beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa 34-24.

Kickoff from Ann Arbor is on Sept. 7 at noon ET on Fox.
