The sports world was shocked when it was announced earlier this week that Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei was in critical condition after suffering burns on 75 percent of her body after she was attacked by her boyfriend.

Cheptegei was doused in petrol and lit on fire by Dickson Ndiema over a dispute of land. On Thursday, it was announced that the long distance runner had succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

The whole situation is tragic, and there has been an outpouring of support in the wake of Cheptegei's death. One such person who chimed in was WNBA Hall of Famer Sheryl Swoopes, who labeled Cheptegei's death as "devastating" in a post on social media.

Cheptegei recently participated in the 2024 Summer Olympics, finishing 44th in the women's marathon event at the Paris Games.

Instead of continuing her successful running career, though, Cheptegei's life has been cut short in an incredibly tragic manner.

Swoopes post certainly brought more attention to the situation, and there's no doubt that folks will continue to pay their respects for the foreseeable future.
