Former NFL Star Drew Brees Explains Why College Football Portal Is a 'Disaster'

Former Purdue Boilermakers quarterback and NFL legend Drew Brees is not sold on the value of the transfer portal for college football quarterbacks.

Some of the nation's top passers are playing this season as transfers. Dillon Gabriel (Oregon), Quinn Ewers (Texas), Cam Ward (Miami) – the list goes on. It can be argued that those mentioned are finding success that they may have not had if not for the ability to transfer without penalty.

But for Brees, the opportunity to exit is limiting development.

"I think the NIL and transfer portal thing is a bit of disaster," Brees said on "The Dan Patrick Show." "I don't think it's giving kids the opportunity to truly develop the way that they normally would."

"I think too often guys are in situations where if they don’t get what they want – if they’re getting coached too hard or if they face a little bit of adversity – they just jump ship," Brees continued."I don’t think that’s the message that we want to send to young people, especially our future leaders."

Brees went on to mention Week 1's matchup between USC and LSU to support his opinion. Trojans' quarterback Miller Moss and Tigers' quarterback Garret Nussmeier waited their turn with Heisman Trophy winners in front of them. Brees believes the same route should be taken for former five-star phenom Arch Manning, who is currently serving as backup to Ewers for the Longhorns.

"I think the best thing for Arch Manning is to stay right where he is," Brees said.
