Robert Saleh, Jets Continue to Say Right Things With Haason Reddick

Holdouts are always a tricky thing in the NFL. Emotions run high, resentment can be built, and the fanbase can turn on a dime in the thoughts of particular players.

That is why communication is always important and messaging from the organization can be the difference between two sides finding a solution or moving even further apart.

In the case of the New York Jets, the current holdout of Pro Bowl edge rusher Haason Reddick has been hotly contested over the last few months.

At least on the player's mindset.

Despite being one of two players to record over 10 sacks in each of the last four seasons, Reddick is just the 20th highest-paid edge rusher in the sport - an underpaid tally he has demanded to change this season.

While the Jets opted to take on the disgruntled star, the game of chicken between both sides has become hotly contested with neither side coming out looking strong.

It's why New York head coach Robert Saleh's comments Saturday morning were so important.

While the organization could very well be frustrated by a newcomer player holding out just days before the start of the regular season, Saleh has taken a passive and welcoming approach whenever Reddick decides to show up.

"I'll stand firm that when he gets here, we're going to welcome him with open arms," Saleh said. "We're going to love him up and he's going to be a part of this football team and he's going to help us win a lot of football games. He's gotta sort through the financial stuff, which is none of my business.”

The olive branch approach is the right way for Saleh to assert himself in these conversations. It helps New York maintain leverage in contract negotiations while still opening the door for an agreement to be made.

It also reinforces the fact that they are focused solely on winning regardless of who is on the field - while recognizing players that are talented in this league.

Reddick's holdout may be bleeding into the regular season, but the Jets won't close the door on a resolution just yet.
