College Football Coach Calls for Major Rule Change After Star Ejected

College football's targeting rule was under fire again on Saturday after Wisconsin star Jake Chaney was tossed during the second half against South Dakota.

Chaney came downhill and nailed South Dakota receiver Javion Phelps in the midsection. After a review, officials ruled it was targeting and Chaney exited the game.

Badgers head coach Luke Fickell defended Chaney and said throwing players out of games is "wrong."

"We're wrong in college football to throw kids out of games," Fickell said in his postgame interview.

The play with Chaney wasn't a typical targeting call and drew a mixed reaction on social media.

"Absolutely awful targeting call from the officials here on Jake Chaney," one fan wrote . "That hit was one of the cleanest hard hits you’re gonna get and he gets ejected because of it. "

Others saw it as clearly the right move to eject Chaney.

"I love football just as much as anyone, but that is textbook targeting," a viewer with a different perspective said.

The Badgers survived without Chaney on the field, beating the Coyotes, 27-13.

However, the more significant issue is that Chaney will miss the first half of Wisconsin's next game against No. 4 Alabama.

Wisconsin is 2-0 after beating South Dakota. The Badgers beat Western Michigan in their opener, 28-14.
