Derek Jeter addressed the Michigan Wolverines football team before their matchup against Texas, but the outcome was disappointing for the defending national champions.

The Wolverines, aiming to build on their successful season, invited the Yankees legend to deliver a locker-room speech the night before the game.

Jeter, a lifelong Michigan fan, shared insights on the challenges of maintaining success as a champion. However, his lack of football experience left him unsure of how his message would resonate with the players.

"Having absolutely zero experience playing football in my life, I don't know if anything registered with them," Jeter said of his speech to the players during an interview on the Big Noon Kickoff Show on Fox .

"I think it's just basically sharing a message, a message of when you're on top, when you're winning and trying to repeat, do it again. I mean, sustainability over time is very, very challenging, and they hope to do that this year," Jeter said .

The Wolverines faced a tough challenge against the No. 3 ranked Longhorns and ultimately lost 31-12.

This defeat ended their impressive streak of 33 consecutive regular-season wins and marked their worst regular-season loss since a 2020 game against Wisconsin.

Texas native Matthew McConaughey, who was also present, took the opportunity to tease Jeter about the outcome. Jeter, who briefly attended Michigan but never played for the team, had hoped to inspire the players with his experience in baseball.

"Jeter, I hope and think it's going to be a long day for your big blue," McConaughey said .

The Wolverines had started the season strong with a win over Fresno State but now must regroup as they navigate a season filled with distractions, including an ongoing NCAA investigation into alleged sign-stealing by former staff members.

Next up for Michigan is a game against unranked Arkansas, followed by a significant conference clash against No. 13 USC. The team will need to refocus and find their rhythm if they hope to reclaim their winning momentum.
