Giants Send 1-Word Message on Benching Daniel Jones After Week 1 Blowout

The New York Giants were walloped 28-6 in their opener by the Minnesota Vikings, leading to questions about Daniel Jones' future.

Jones was the No. 6 overall pick of the Giants in 2019. He's had an up-and-down tenure in New York, recording an overall record of 22-36-1 as the starting quarterback.

Jones' best season came in 2022, when he passed for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. He played in just six games last season, tearing the ACL in his left knee. Jones agreed to four-year, $160 million extension with the Giants in 2023. There's a potential out next offseason for the Giants, so Jones has to prove he can be the starter now.

He didn't do that in the opener. Jones completed 22 of 42 passes in the Week 1 loss to the Vikings, including a pair of interceptions — one that was returned by Minnesota linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel for a touchdown.

After the game, Giants head coach Brian Daboll was asked if he considered benching Jones and gave a one-word answer.

    "No," Daboll said firmly.

Daboll, who is entering his third season with the Giants, shouldered the blame after the loss.

"We're going to go back and watch it. We certainly called plays," Daboll said of the lack of downfield passing. "Sometimes they talk them away. We've got to do a better job all around, starts with me."

The Giants and Jones will look to turn things around next week in a divisional clash against the Washington Commanders.
