With 7:15 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Raiders trailing the Chargers 16-10, Las Vegas faced a 4th and 1 play at the Los Angeles 43-yard line. Despite trailing and needing a touchdown, head coach Antonio Pierce made the surprising decision to punt the ball.

According to a 4th-down decision bot on X, the Raiders cost themselves 8.5 percentage points in win probability by deciding to punt. The Raiders only had a 66% chance of converting in the situation, but their win probability would go from 13% in the event of a punt to 30% in the event of a converted fourth down.

According to the Surrender Index, the punt ranked in the 99.9th percentile of cowardly punts since 1999. The decision to punt showed minimal faith in the team's offense, and the cowardly decision wound up costing the Raiders dearly.

Los Angeles scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive as Ladd McConkey caught a pass from Justin Herbert for ten yards and the score. The Chargers attempted the two-point conversion and failed after that.

The Chargers won the game 22-10, opening the Jim Harbaugh era with a 1-0 record. Meanwhile, Pierce has some significant questions regarding his faith in his team. Raiders fans hope to see more conviction from the first-year head coach in late-game situations moving forward.
