I'm lucky enough to work remotely now, but things weren't always this way. The words I would use to describe a daily commute are along the lines of "boring" and sometimes even "frustrating." But some people using local transit in the Atlanta suburbs ended up in the middle of a scene straight out of an action movie this week, and in the scariest way possible.

A commuter bus was hijacked in Georgia this week, leading police on a chase that trailed through two counties, and unfortunately, in the end, one person ended up dead. This kind of thing certainly doesn't happen every day, and this time, it came with some tragic results.

One person was fatally shot in connection with a bus hijacking that prompted a police chase through two Georgia counties on Tuesday, authorities said. The incident began in downtown Atlanta, when police responded to a report of gunfire on a Gwinnett County Transit bus and a "possible hostage situation," the Atlanta Police Department said. The suspect held the bus driver at gunpoint during the hijacking, according to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. There were 17 people on the bus at the time, including the bus driver. The story was shared on the official ABC News TikTok account on Wednesday, June 12, and it seems like it was a pretty horrifying situation.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday, when a man hijacked a Gwinnett County Transit bus, creating a hostage situation around 4:30 p.m., when people were just trying to get home from work. You can hear the 911 call in the video above, and it seems that the person who hijacked the bus wouldn't let the driver stop with a gun held to their head.

Here, we can see the footage of the bus erratically driving through busy streets, even sideswiping cars in the process.

Eventually, police were able to pop the tires of the bus, bringing the chase to an end, but one passenger died after being shot on board. It's hard to imagine just how heartbreaking and horrifying this must have been for everyone on board, along with their families.

More About the Georgia Commuter Bus Hijacking

According to CNN, when reports that 39-year-old Joseph Grier had shot a passenger with his own gun on a bus in downtown Atlanta rolled in, police immediately responded, and it was then that he held the driver at gunpoint and told him to speed away.

Following the bus chase, it finally stopped in Stone Mountain, where Grier was arrested and the passengers were finally safe.

While this was going on, other passengers on the bus were calling their loved ones and 911 in a panic, including a woman named Paulette Gilbert, who called her husband, Johnny Gilbert.

"She said the guy got on the bus and seemed kinda crazy. He was being disruptive or getting on people’s nerves," Gilbert said.

Grier was charged with "one count of murder, 14 counts of kidnapping, 13 counts of aggravated assault, one count of first-degree hijacking of a motor vehicle, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and one count of possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies."

It's safe to say this is the kind of movie scene no one ever wants to live out in real life, and there's no doubt that the passengers are still reeling from the experience.
