    Old Mt. Vernon Highway bridge demolition begins July 22

    Demolition of the old Mt. Vernon Highway bridge over I-285 will begin Monday, July 22, weather permitting, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT)

    GDOT contractors are expected to take up to four weeks to complete the demolition, according to a news release.

    Traffic pacing and lane closures will be implemented six nights a week, Monday through Saturday, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. These closures will be simultaneous on I-285 eastbound and westbound between the Chattahoochee River overpass and Ashford Dunwoody Road, according to the release. Motorists can expect up to three lanes closed on I-285 in either direction between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

    The exact time may change due to weather conditions. All traffic lanes will remain open during daytime hours.

    Overnight Closures & Pacing

    Overnight closures starting on Monday, July 22, from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Pacing operations begin on the same date, from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Closures and pacing will continue for approximately four weeks, Monday through Saturday.

    Up to three lanes will close on I-285 eastbound from Riverside Drive to Mt. Vernon Highway.

    Up to three lanes will close on I-285 westbound from Long Island Drive to Mt. Vernon Highway.

    The I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane project extends the auxiliary lane between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive and reconstructs the Mt. Vernon Highway bridge over I-285. Additional project information is available at I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane Extension (arcgis.com) .
