Braves Make Move For 3-time All-Star

The Atlanta Braves on Sunday took a swing on a multi-time All-Star.

The Braves signed utility player Whit Merrifield to a major league deal, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Merrifield had spent the early part of the 2024 season with the Philadelphia Phillies. He batted .199 with three home runs and a miserable .572 OPS over 53 games before being released by the team.

With Merrifield's ability to play second base, it makes sense that Atlanta would bring him in. The Braves need more depth in the infield after star second baseman Ozzie Albies fractured his left wrist.

The Braves may be hoping that a change of scenery could reignite Merrifield's effectiveness at the plate.

The 35-year-old was named an All-Star last season as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. Merrifield batted .272 with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs across 145 games for the Canadian squad. He also recorded 26 stolen bases.

Merrifield is a three-time All-Star who was once served as an anchor for the Kansas City Royals' lineup. With injury troubles plaguing the Braves this season, perhaps Merrifield is worth taking a flier on.
