The NFL is known for its unanticipated twists and turns, some of which surprise fans and players. This season, one of the most stunning disclosures in the NFL centers on the Atlanta Falcons.

    The Falcons' Bold Move

In March 2024, the Atlanta Falcons extended a contract to Kirk Cousins, previously a quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. There was an obvious strategy behind signing one of the top passers in the league.

Per the Falcons, Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million deal with a $100 million guarantee. Under that contract, he would receive $90 million in the 2024 season and an additional $10 million in 2026. The significance of this generous offer made the Falcons' subsequent decision even more perplexing.

    Drafting Michael Penix Jr.

What happened exactly? The team unexpectedly decided to add Michael Penix Jr. as a backup quarterback. The shock was felt across the organization.

An ESPN article quoted an NFL executive expressing his disbelief:

    This executive wasn’t alone.

The choice was unexpected for Cousin as well. ESPN confirmed this with a statement from Cousins' camp, which said,

The Falcons' Strategy: Assessing the Impact

Considering the subsequent developments, such as the impact on team dynamics and player performance, it's inevitable to question the wisdom of signing Penix.

If the financial aspect of the initial offer to Kirk Cousins is ignored, the motivation behind this move becomes clear. The Falcons are determined to have a winning season and will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal.

Another element to remember is that Cousins is returning from an injury he suffered during week 8 of the 2023 season against the Green Bay Packers, where the seasoned player damaged his Achilles tendon, taking him out of the game.

The Injury Factor: Protecting the Offensive Line

Cousins has been cleared to play, but injuries like this cannot be underestimated. According to the National Library of Medicine,

This knowledge could have played a vital role in the strategic move. It is easy to infer they decided to protect their offensive line.

    Cousins' Perspective on Penix

The psychological aspect plays a significant role in how players like Cousins perceive and perform in such situations. Including Penix as a backup raises concerns about how it will impact Cousins' concentration and performance on the field.

    A Humble Approach

What is clear about the situation is that Penix received congratulations from Cousins for his new position, and in June, Cousins shared his thoughts on the unconventional strategic decision.

Cousins mentioned drawing guidance from Proverbs 3:5-6 and placing trust in the Lord during periods of uncertainty. He humbly stated, "It may not go as I hope, but I trust in Him because He has never let me down."

Cousins Experience And Focus On Improvement

Is there any other response Cousins could have had? Honestly, there isn't much he can do other than mentally prepare himself and focus on playing the game he's trained for. According to ESPN, he has 12 years of experience in the league and understands that teams make decisions based on what they believe is best for their organization.

Not to mention, he has a specific history of such things. Having been drafted in the fourth round and later replacing first-round pick Robert Griffin III in Washington, Cousins has experience in the competitive nature of teams striving for improvement. He is fully aware of the dynamic nature of the sport and remains determined to continue improving his performance. Plus, with his guaranteed contract, there's little need for him to worry.

Some may advocate that there could have been a more compassionate stance. It's essential to acknowledge that in the NFL, business decisions frequently prioritize financial gains over personal connections, reflecting the competitive nature of the league. The objective is to win games, where player loyalty is often secondary to achieving victory.

The Falcons And The Business Of Football

Cousins's return shouldn't cause concern if he returns ideally at a level comparable to or relatively close to what he did before his injury. However, this determination can only be made once he takes the field.

He has already earned his legacy, including four Pro Bowl selections, a 76-67-2 record as a starting quarterback, a remarkable completion percentage of 66.9%, and a career total of over 3,400 completions. No matter how things turn out, those stats are solidified.
