Four Atmore men and one woman were arrested July 22 on drug and attempting to elude charges, according to officials.

Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said Tondrae Forney, 21, and Layton Frye, 20, were charged with possession of marijuana I, possession of drug paraphernalia and attempting to elude a police officer; Kendarrius Bivins, 21, and Lea Odom, 19, were charged with possession of marijuana I and possession of drug paraphernalia; and Kendrick Bivins, 22, was charged with drug trafficking, possession of marijuana I, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of attempting to elude a police officer.

McMann said in a release that at approximately 6:50 p.m. on July 22, an APD officer was on routine patrol when he observed a vehicle turn partially into a driveway on Sims Street, and observed the driver flee from the vehicle on foot.

“The officer had not made any effort to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle nor was intending on stopping the vehicle,” McMann said. “The driver was later identified as Kendrick Bivins, age 22, of Atmore. The officer approached the vehicle and detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.”
McMann said the officer then conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle, and discovered more than 80 grams of synthetic cannabis (spice), a small amount of marijuana and numerous plastic baggies.

Later Monday night at approximately 11:15, APD narcotics investigators, assisted by patrol officers and an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy, were attempting to locate Kendrick Bivins at a residence on Fisher Lane.

“When the officers arrived at the residence, they observed three people flee from the residence through the back door,” McMann said. “The three subjects were detained and identified as Tondrae Forney, age 21, of Atmore, Layton Frye, age 20, of Atmore, and Kendrick Bivins.”

McMann said the officers then contacted and detained Kendarrius Bivins, 21, of Atmore, and Odom, when the officers requested anyone else inside the residence to come out.

“The officers obtained a search warrant for the residence due to the overwhelming odor of marijuana coming from inside the residence,” he said. “Upon executing the search warrant the officers discovered over 50 grams of marijuana, numerous plastic baggies used to package narcotics and digital scales.”
All five were then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
