LAFAYETTE — The Journal & Courier sports department is proud to present the 21st annual Student-Athlete of the Year awards. The selections were based on a student-athlete's athletic and academic achievements, along with community activities. The winners were asked to write about what high school athletics meant to them.

Indiana, Purdue Alumni Teams Meet in The Basketball Tournament
Assembly Ball, Indiana’s alumni team, and the Men of Mackey, a Purdue-based team, will match up in the Round of 32 in The Basketball Tournament on Sunday at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Top Moments of the Year: Fountain Central Mustangs
The Journal Review’s Top Sports Moments of the year series continues with the Fountain Central Mustangs. Since day one of her freshman season, Brailey Hoagland has been a staple runner for the Mustang program. This past season she kept adding her name to the record books for FC. As it currently stands between cross country and track and field, Hoagland holds five Mustang records which include; 200 meter dash (26.18), long jump (16ft. 3in), 400 meter dash (59.69), 100 meter dash (12.24) and the 5K (20.17.5).

With just 44 days left until kickoff for the 2024 Purdue Boilermakers football season, there are a pair that share that #44 with defensive back Ayden Murray and long snapper Nick Levy. Murray, a defensive back out of Shakur Heights, Ohio, was a preferred walk-on in the 2024 class. At just 5’10 and 168 pounds, the small defensive back was an all-conference player twice while garnering defensive player of the year honors his senior season.

We are just forty three days away from kickoff for the Purdue Boilermakers and the 2024 football season. That brings us to redshirt freshman Landon Heard from Los Gatos, California. The former two star player chose the Boilers as a walk-on and is currently undecided in his studies. The 5’11 195 pound defensive back looks to provide depth in a very talented defensive backfield and run with the special teams units. He did not see the field during his freshman season in 2023.
