As Auburn prepares for what shapes up to be a pivotal 2024 college football season, Jarquez Hunter has gotten another vote of confidence from national media. This time it's the Doak Walker Award, given to the best running back in the nation every year.
Jarquez's career at Auburn to this point has already earned him a substantial place in Auburn's history, placing 18th in the career rushing yards list for the program. A one thousand yard season for Hunter in 2024 would place him at least in the top 10 of Auburn's all time rushers, if not the top 5. He also holds the record for the longest run in the history of the program, a 95 yard feat he achieved in 2021, playing just his second game of his Auburn career.
Despite playing the first two years of his career in the shadow of Tank Bigsby, Jarquez Hunter will be assuming the RB1 duties again, this time as the senior member of the position group. Behind him will be a stable of talented backs that have already shown tremendous progress. Notable among them are Damari Alston, an all-around back whose shown as much ability as Hunter did with his early opportunities, and Jeremiah Cobb, a speedy swiss army knife of a weapon who's done a lot of the work players like Kerryon Johnson and Onterio McCalebb have for Auburn in the past.
The Board of Directors responsible for voting on the winner of the award will narrow the list to ten semifinalists in November, then three finalists. Then, in December, the committee will cast a second vote to determine the winner of the award.
