AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The pedestrian bridge at Eisenhower Park leading to the Augusta Canal tow path has reopened after water main break damaged infrastructure in area more than a week ago.

According to Augusta Utilities , the pedestrian bridge was reopened Monday afternoon, July 1 st , 2024, just in time for the July 4 th holiday weekend.

Last week, the popular entryway to the Augusta Canal trail looked like it`d been hit by a bomb – and it stayed like that for days as contractors were called out to fix the damaged area..

A giant crater was left hollowed out at the end of the foot bridge across the canal from Eisenhower Park following a major water main break pouring out approximately 1 million gallons of water from the Augusta Canal across the parking lot of the Augusta Utilities Department at the Raw Water Pumping Station Thursday evening, June 20th, and completely blocking the Augusta Canal towpath and trail.

Director Wes Byne said that the section of the 30-inch pipe that failed was 130 years old.

The overall canal trail was still in us – but repairs-in-progress meant the pedestrian bridge could stay closed for up to several weeks.

Residents who spoke with WJBF last week were anxious to have the foot bridge reopened so they could enter the canal at Eisenhower Park just across the canal from the pumping station.
