A woman is suing the Augusta-Richmond County after allegedly falling into a water meter hole on a public sidewalk in June 2023.

The lawsuit, filed in Richmond County Superior Court in May, claims Diane Hunter was walking on a public sidewalk near 1007 Jones St. when she stepped on a covered water meter and it suddenly gave way underneath her, according to court documents.

Her foot fell into the hole and her body landed on the sidewalk, causing exposed bone, cartilage and ligaments on her left ankle, according to court documents. She was taken to Augusta University Medical Center's emergency room and treated for her injuries.

The lawsuit claims the defective water meter cover was caused by negligent care and maintenance of the sidewalk and the county should have known it was hazardous, according to court documents.

It also states the county was aware of the issue and received complaints from their own personnel and other citizens.

Hunter is seeking the cost of her medical expenses, which amounted to nearly $83,000, according to court documents. She is also seeking damages for pain and suffering and mental anguish.
