    Augusta-area summer vacations end soon. Here's what families need to know before school

    There's just a little bit of summer left. That means it's time for kids to stuff their backpacks, pack their lunches, and get ready for the start of the 2024-25 school year. Students in Richmond and Columbia counties will return to classes in early August. Meanwhile, many Aiken County students already have started classes.

    As the summer comes to a close, there are some important dates to make sure you have marked on your calendar and students will need some things before the first day. Here's a look at what Augusta-area families need to know regarding back-to-school dates and supplies:

    When is the first day of school for Augusta-area students?

    Richmond County's first day for elementary schools is Monday, Aug. 5 while the other schools (middle, high, magnet, and K-8) start Tuesday, Aug. 6.

    Columbia County's first day for all schools is Aug. 5.

    Aiken County's first day for all public schools is Monday, July 22.

    When are school open houses in the Augusta area?

    Richmond County open houses are noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 for elementary schools and noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 for the school district's other schools.

    Columbia County open houses are 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, July 30 for high schools and later that day 5-7 p.m. will be open houses for middle schools. Elementary schools' open houses are 5-7 p.m. Aug. 1.

    Aiken County Public Schools' spokesperson Ashley Bodine said open houses are not scheduled until later in the school year.

    When is school registration in the Augusta area?

    Richmond County School System's early registration is 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. now through Friday, July 26. On-site registration is available 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31. For more information, go to rcboe.org/registration.

    Columbia County registration is open now with new and existing families being asked to register at ccboe.net/registration before the first day of school. Aiken County registration is available at acpsd.net/page/registration-hub.

    What school supplies do Augusta-area students need?

    School supply lists vary by school, but they can be found on the schools' websites. They will also be available for families who meet their students' teachers in advance of the first day of school.

    In the meantime, the Augusta Chronicle looked over several school supplies list. Here were some of the most common items:

    • Composition notebooks
    • Pencils
    • Folders with prongs/pockets
    • Pencil box/pouch
    • Glue sticks
    • Crayons and colored pencils
    • Headphones

    When do Augusta-area students get another vacation?

    Richmond County students will get a three-day weekend for Labor Day, which is on Monday, Sept. 2. It will be followed by an asynchronous day (where students learning from home). There will also be a bit of a break where students are off Oct. 10, learn asynchronously the next day, then don't go back to school until Oct. 16.

    Columbia County students all get a three-day Labor Day weekend. They also get a break from Friday, Oct. 11 to Monday, Oct. 14.

    Aiken County students will have an even longer Labor Day weekend Aug. 30 through Sept. 2. They will also be on fall break from Wednesday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 13.
