Man, 41, killed in shooting on East Chapman Street in Augusta

An Augusta man is dead after a fatal shooting early Thursday on East Chapman Street in Augusta.

Willie Lee Gonder, 41, of the 700 block of East Chapman Street, was shot at least once and pronounced dead, according to a news release from the Richmond County Coroner's Office.

Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 700 block of East Chapman Street just before 1 a.m. Thursday for a suspicious situation, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

When they arrived, they found a man, later identified as Gonder, who was shot at least once, according to the release. He was taken to Wellstar/MCG, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been scheduled, according to the coroner's office.
