    Grandson arrested after Augusta woman’s stabbing

    BUTLER COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — A man is facing a charge of attempted murder after police allege he stabbed his grandmother last Friday.

    Officers with the Augusta Department of Public Safety were sent to investigate a stabbing at a home near Augusta Lake just after 2 p.m. Friday. They found a 70-year-old woman in serious condition. She was taken to a Wichita hospital and is expected to recover.

    Officers investigated and questioned witnesses. The investigation led them to the victim’s grandson, Gage Douglas Apel. They found him about a mile from the scene and arrested him with help from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

    Court documents show Apel is charged with attempted murder in the first degree and two counts of aggravated assault. At last check, he was still in the Butler County Jail, held on a $500,000 bond.
