A Colorado mother has been sentenced for murdering her five-year-old daughter.

According to PEOPLE , Alexus Tanielle Nelson , 28, was sentenced to 84 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, tampering with a deceased body, and attempting to influence a public servant in connection to the death of her daughter , Maha Li Hobbs .

Nelson's sentence comes after the Aurora Police Department found Hobbs' charred remains in Nelson's apartment during a wellness check. The wellness check was requested by Nelson's mother who said her daughter made "concerning statements" to her in text messages. The grandmother also said she hadn't heard or seen Hobbs in roughly three weeks.

During the welfare check, Nelson initially claimed that she had put Hobbs up for adoption. Authorities then contacted the adoption agency and they “claimed they had no contact or case file with Nelson or her daughter,” according to a press release.

Officials returned to Nelson's home where they found an odor coming from a closet.

“Inside a bag, detectives found the charred human remains of Nelson’s daughter. Bone fragments in ashes were also located inside Nelson’s fireplace,” the release said.

As a part of her plea deal, Nelson's trial dates were vacated and she won't have the possibility to appeal.

“This mother knew about available adoption programs that could have cared for this 5-year-old but instead, she chose murder,” District Attorney John Kellner said. “While there is no way to fully comprehend what turned this mother into a monster, she deserves to spend several decades behind bars for the unspeakable crime she committed.”
