AURORA, Colo. ( KDVR ) — A crash early Wednesday morning knocked out power for thousands of residents at an Aurora apartment complex.

A driver allegedly lost control of their vehicle at 4th Avenue and Sable Boulevard in the City Center North area. Witnesses said the SUV jumped the curb, hit an Xcel Energy electrical switching cabinet, went airborne off a wall and rolled over.

The vehicle ended up against a wall about thirty yards away.

People living in the area said they heard an explosion when the crash occurred. Xcel crews said they likely heard the sound of the electrical box being hit.

At one point, as many as 3,000 customers around the apartment complex were without power, according to Xcel Energy.

Aurora police told FOX31, three people were taken to local hospitals and their injuries don’t appear to be significant. Police said they do not have information on contributing factors.

Xcel has been on the scene for several hours in an attempt to restore power.
