DENVER ( KDVR ) — Twenty people were displaced after a fire engulfed an Aurora three-plex building.

At around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, the Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire near 700 North Fraser St. The area is in the Chambers Heights neighborhood.

When fire crews arrived, they encountered a heavy fire burning a two-story, three-plex building. Fire crews quickly got to work containing the blaze and ensured the safety of everyone, including pets, who were inside the building.

Aurora Fire said an adult female sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Fire crews said they encountered intense heat and utilized “four attack hose lines” to extinguish the flames. However, all three units sustained serious damage, and the home is no longer inhabitable.

In total, 14 adults and six children were displaced due to the extensive damage, according to Aurora Fire. The Red Cross will provide support for the families.

FOX31’s Vicente Arenas spoke with a family who lives next to the burned-out building. They said their grandfather came home and noticed the burning. He said he didn’t know what to do but then started waking his family.

“He was calling like knocking on our door and he said the house was burning. All I got was my phone and was shaking my husband to get up because the house was on fire,” Valeria Ramirez Campos said.

Fortunately, firefighters were able to stop the blaze before it reached their home. New video also showed firefighters working on a dog at the scene of the fire. Aurora Fire Rescue told FOX31 that the dog was rescued from one of the apartments that caught fire. Firefighters administered oxygen, placed the dog in a blanket, and used passive cooling techniques to lower the dog’s temperature.

Aurora police transported the pet to a veterinarian clinic. As of 6:45 p.m., the dog’s status was unknown.

Tuesday afternoon, Aurora Fire Rescue said investigators determined that the cause of the fire was “accidental in nature,” and said the blaze started in the kitchen of one of the units.
