AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — A family is working to heal after a mother of three was struck by a motorcycle while trying to cross a street in Aurora this weekend.

Tammy Burchfield, 39, died at the hospital from her injuries. Her family says they never expected something like this to happen.

John Burchfield, her husband, told FOX31 he was in the area at the time, which makes the loss even more difficult to process. John pointed to the area where his wife was struck.

He said he went outside and saw police and what looked like a crime scene.

“The first thing I see is her shoe,” he said.

John said he was married to his wife for 10 years.

“She was the kindest, strongest woman I’ve ever known in my life,” he said.

Police say his wife was crossing the intersection at Ironton Street and Alameda Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Reports show Tammy crossed midblock in front of the motorcycle.

“She was here crossing the street going to that 7-Eleven to buy sports and energy drinks,” John said.

‘It’s just hard knowing I’ll never see her again’

The two were planning a fun day at the park with their kids.

“She was on her way back when she got hit,” John said. “She got hit so hard it knocked her out of both of her shoes.”

The bike approximately traveled 150 feet after colliding with her.

“I had just woken up. One of my coworkers called me and said that my mom had been in an accident,” said Melissa Shaw, Tammy’s 18-year-old daughter. “They said she was in critical condition and I needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible.”

After using more than 100 units of blood, the family learned three hours later that she did not make it.

“I was in shock and I couldn’t believe it,” John said with tears in his eyes. “I was positive I was going to the hospital and she was going to have a broken leg. There’s no way you could have convinced me I would have seen where my wife just died.”

Her family is still processing the untimely loss.

“It’s just hard knowing I’ll never see her again,” Melissa said.

Police say drugs, alcohol and speed are not believed to be a factor in the crash. There was no word as of Thursday on whether any charges are pending.

The family has started a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs.
