AURORA, Ill. — One person was arrested and two others were injured after a street racing incident in Aurora.

Aurora police said at around 1:15 a.m. Saturday, July 13, officers were sent to the 2300 block of Sequoia Drive to investigate reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they found a 25-year-old man lying on the ground with injuries to his arm. He was taken to Mercy Hospital where doctors treated him for spinal fractures and other injuries.

Investigators determined the man was recording a 2004 Chevrolet Corvette and another vehicle drag racing along Sequoia Drive when the Corvette lost control, hitting the man and another person who sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Corvette, identified as Alexander Touhy of North Aurora, has been charged with aggravated reckless driving, street racing, and “several related traffic violations.” Police said more charges are possible pending results from medical tests.

“Contrary to what is often depicted in popular movies, street racing is not a harmless thrill. It is a dangerous and illegal activity that poses serious risks to participants, bystanders, and the community,” Aurora Police Chief Keith Cross said. “The recent incident on Sequoia Drive serves as a stark reminder of these dangers.”
