AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The governing body for Texas public high school sports released its biennial realignment and reclassification Thursday, shuffling the state's high schools for athletic competition for the next two years - with several effects on Austin-area schools.

The UIL uses enrollment cutoffs to determine which schools are placed into which classifications, with schools that have 2,275 students or more falling into 6A, the state's highest classification.

Most of the area's largest schools will compete in two districts in the 6A classification - including playoff contenders such as Westlake, Lake Travis, and Vandegrift.

The new District 25-6A will add Hutto to compete with Vandegrift, Vista Ridge, Manor, Round Rock, McNeil, Stony Point, Westwood, and Cedar Ridge. District 26-6A will be trimmed slightly from its previous configuration, featuring Austin High, Akins, Bowie, Lake Travis, Westlake, Del Valle, and Dripping Springs.

AISD's Anderson High drops from 6A to 5A Division 1, falling into the new District 12-5A-D1 which also includes Cedar Creek, Hays, College Station, A&M Consolidated, Lehman, Lockhart, Hendrickson, and Weiss.

Hays CISD's Johnson High, which was previously in 26-6A, will now compete in 29-6A, along with San Marcos and several San Antonio-area schools including Cibolo Steele and Converse Judson.

Other area teams are grouped into District 8-5A Division 1, which includes Cedar Park, Georgetown, East View, Killeen Chaparral, Lake Belton, Leander, Glenn, and Rouse.

Several AISD schools will compete in the smaller 5A Division 2, where District 11 will include Crockett, LASA, McCallum, Navarro, Bastrop, Elgin, Liberty Hill, Pflugerville, and Connally.

Austin ISD will also have a number of schools competing in the 4A classification. In Division 1, the new District 13 will include Austin Achieve, Eastside, Johnson, Northeast, and Travis, in addition to Manor New Tech and Taylor.
