AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- One person is dead and several others were injured Tuesday evening after a vehicle crashed into an emergency room at a North Austin hospital, officials said.

First responders were called to the scene just after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. David's North Austin Medical Center in the 12200 block of North MoPac Expressway.

Officials say the driver was pronounced deceased on the scene after crews extricated them from the vehicle and performed CPR. According to Austin Police, preliminary information did not seem to indicate that the crash was an intentional act.

In addition to the driver, four other patients injured in the crash were transported to other hospitals. Two pediatric patients and one adult were transported to Dell Children's Medical Center, with one of the pediatric patients in critical condition; a second adult patient said to be in critical condition was transported to Round Rock Medical Center.

A fifth person injured in the crash was treated on scene, officials said.

ATCEMS medics originally reported as many as 10 patients involved as they were arriving on the scene.

Hospital officials were working with first responders to transport eight other patients who were already being treated in the emergency room at the time of the crash to other facilities in order to better manage their ongoing care. The emergency department at the hospital was expected to remain closed for at least the rest of the night, officials said, with ambulances being diverted to other facilities.

Dozens of first responders surged to the scene, including an Austin Fire hazmat task force and several ATCEMS units.

Officials said to expect traffic delays in the area while crews work to contain the scene.
