AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin's reign as one of the nation's ten largest cities is over, at least for now.

New city-level population estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau rank Austin at 11th nationally, down one spot from last year, with a population of 979,982 people.

Jacksonville, Florida leapfrogged Austin, taking the number 10 spot with a population of 985,843.

Other Texas cities in the top ten include Houston (#4), San Antonio (#7), and Dallas (#9). Fort Worth is just behind Austin at number 12, with a population of 978,468.

"For decades, the red-hot regional economy coupled with a relatively lower cost of living yielded substantial population growth in Central Texas,” said City of Austin demographer Lila Valencia. "However, with volatility rattling the tech sector, housing costs rising post-pandemic, and more opportunities for remote work, it’s not surprising to see population growth slowing and Austin slipping back into position as the 11th largest city."
